Dosas – February 2009 (Mumbai, India)

dosa1This is the first of a series of posts on food in India.  We spent a couple weeks in Southern India in February 2009, eating as much as we could without wreaking unnecessary havoc in our bellies.  One of great staples of South Indian food is the dosa, which is something like a crêpe made of rice and lentils.  Dosas come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and are accompanied by any number of fillings and dipping sauces, many of which we ate without fully understanding.

The first memorable dosas we ate in Mumbai were at an incredible restaurant called Swati Snacks — which many people say is their favorite place to eat in the city (see here too).  It was one of very few restaurants we visited more than once on this trip.  (There may be another post on Swati Snacks coming soon.)  This dosa came in a conical shape and had some (mysterious) greens cooked into it.  The dosa was delicious, although the great presentation dissembled the moment we started tearing pieces away.  Also, the drink in the picture is a sugar cane fizz, which is basically sugar cane juice and seltzer.  It is very special and very refreshing.  Too bad you can’t find it so easily in the States!
