Hyderabadi Bazaar (Hyderabad, India)

bazaar7Yet another post about India that is only half food-related, but still seemed worthy of inclusion.  While we were in Hyderabad for an elaborate wedding, we took an afternoon trip down to one of the old Muslim bazaars in the city, near the famous site of Charminar.  The bazaar was teeming with activity — these pictures were the first to make me nostalgic for the feverish crowds and ceaseless energy of India — and pretty tasty-looking food items.  We didn’t eat, but we ogled.

Also, Charminar was pretty great to see.

Spice Market (Fort Cochin, Kerala, India)

spicemkt2This is not entirely a post on food, but it seems to fall within the general ambit of this site.  While we were in Kerala, we visited the famous spice markets in Fort Cochin, after being pestered into taking a guided tour by drivers of “tuk tuk ferraris.”  The spice markets dealt primarily in ayurvedic “spices,” but edible spices were also available, including ginger, star anise, and a number of others.  The storage facilities were beautiful and old — they have been used since approximately 1500, when the Portuguese based their tea trading out of the city, I believe.  Also, the lime-covered drying area for ginger was a memorable and blinding spectacle.  The one thing the pictures don’t convey is the smells, which were powerful and lingering.
